Modern digital coaching through the internet

Through the years the coach for the GT Group Vésteinn Hafsteinsson has lived in Helsingborg and now since four years in Växjö in Sweden. But there is only one of the GT athlete that lives in Växjö, Kim Christensen that moved two years ago, and before none of the athletes lived in Helsingborg.

The coaching has always been done by putting on training camps for the group approximately ten times a year. Usually four or five of these camps have been in Sweden and then the group has been in Pretoria and Potchefstroom in S-Africa, Alfas Del Pi and Tenerife in Spain, Chula Vista in USA, some camps are always in Tallinn each year and then before championships camps are put on close to the city where the championships are.

In between training camps then the athletes have trained at home alone or with their locally based coaches and the athletes have filmed their throwing and sent it to VH and then he has analysed it and responded by email, telephone or Skype conversations.

For some time VH has been testing mostly with the Arrhenius brothers to coach them live through streaming or Skype. Then the athletes just bring their camera, lap top, I pad or even a phone or whatever digital system they use to the training hall. The only thing that is needed is internet connection and it is also easy if it is not installed in the hall to just have a digital stick and call up and get on line. Then the athletes call up VH when they are ready to throw and he coaches them as he usually does when they meet. If VH wants to get the throw in a slow motion or frame by frame he just films his own computer screen and can analyse the details simultaneously.

VH and his athletes in the GT Group are using this technique much more than before and as an example Leif and Niklas Arrhenius as well as Märt Israel use this technique in every throwing session now many times a week. In between we still use the possibility of filming and putting the films in the Dropbox but the LIVE coaching is much more effective and fun and both VH and the athletes are enjoying it a lot.

We can say that they are very far away from each other but still very close.
