Great performance for Niklas

Niklas Arrhenius won the discus throw at the Swedish Championship today with his best performance of the year 63.87m.


His previous best was 62.23m thrown in early July. This performance today is very good for Niklas and really deserved after a long way back to top level after his tough year in 2009.

It was actually so that Niklas was in his best discus shape ever in May 2009 and had a practice throw in Chula Vista in California of 68.28m and threw 65.42m in a meet at the same venue. Soon after that he hurt his foot and when he was coming back he twisted his foot playing basketball and these injuries spoiled the whole season of 2009.

This year the foot was bothering him the whole way through May and when he came in the middle of June he started with 57m in the first meet over here in Europe. At the time he had thrown less than 18m in shot as well outdoors after a pretty good indoor season with 18.90m at Swedish Indoor Championship in February.

Since 22 June Niklas has been training hard in Växjö and competed in all possible meets in Sweden in both events as well as he has gone to couple of meets abroad. He had already thrown a great PR in shot twice first 19.61m in Karlstad and then 19.75m in Göteborg some time ago.

Then he was very close in Bedford, GBR some days ago in the discus and had 61.60m and it looked he had more to show as he had thrown 63m in practice shortly before. Then this today was just great and the best thing is that he could throw 63.14m again in the last throw.

This shows that even if it has taken more than a year to come back, never give up. Niklas is back and getting to be better than ever in both shot and discus. It is great for him and I really appreciate all the help that the club, federation and not least his wife Tiffany, father Anders and Åke Ruus have put into this and never given up on his way back.
